- The French Connection actor Gene Hackman, who last appeared in a film in 2004, lived in Santa Fe with Betsy Arakawa, to whom he had been married for 33 years.
- Arakawa's last known errand was on February 11, and she is believed to have died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare respiratory infection caused by exposure to rodent feces, urine, or saliva, about a week before Hackman.
- Hackman seemingly died on February 18, with his death attributed to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease, according to the New Mexico Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Heather Jarrell, who noted, "It's quite possible he was not aware she was deceased."
- Following the deaths, Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated there was no immediate danger to the community and that a preliminary death investigation was underway, with Tim Hackman, the actor's nephew, mentioning that toxicology reports were pending to determine the cause of death amidst various theories.
