Gen. Chris Donahue set to retire as Army commander in Europe and Africa, in latest departure by top military official
Multiple sources said Donahue submitted retirement papers after clashing with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as senior military departures continue under the Trump administration.
Gen. Chris Donahue, who has led U.S. Army Europe and Africa, is set to retire amid Pentagon restructuring efforts by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that include limiting the rank of that command from four-star to three-star.
Donahue is recognized for commanding Delta Force, the 82nd Airborne Division, and was the last U.S. soldier to leave Afghanistan in 2021.
Secretary Hegseth's leadership changes also involve firing or sidelining other senior officers, including Gen. Randy George.
The downgrade of the Army Europe and Africa command and associated retirements mark a significant reshaping of Pentagon leadership.
