HBO Developing True Crime Series About Sacramento Serial Killer Dorothea Puente

The series follows a Sacramento boarding-house owner whose murders and stolen benefits made her one of California’s most notorious serial killers.

  • HBO is developing a true crime drama series titled Dorothea, starring Oscar-winning actress Geena Davis as Sacramento serial killer Dorothea Puente. The project explores Puente's boarding house operation in the 1980s.
  • Smallville alum Michael Rosenbaum identified the idea and brought it to Bristol Circle Entertainment, the production company of former Sony Pictures Television Studios President Jeff Frost. Rosenbaum and writing partner Jane Whitney developed the series with showrunner Joshua Michael Stern.
  • Operating a boarding house in the 1980s, Puente secretly murdered her boarders to collect Social Security checks. Although charged with murdering nine people, she was convicted of three and died in prison in 2011.
  • For Davis, who recently appeared in Netflix's The Boroughs, this marks her first series starring vehicle since the ABC political drama Commander in Chief. She also executive produces the project.
  • Puente's criminal history has previously been profiled in Netflix's Worst Roommate Ever and on Very Local's Hometown Tragedy. The HBO project adds to existing media representations of the serial killer's story.
