Gavin Williams Throws Seven Strong Innings, Three Guardians Homer in 5-2 Victory over Twins
On Thursday in Minneapolis, Gavin Williams pitched seven dominant innings with 11 strikeouts, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins and avoiding a three-game sweep.
Retiring the first 13 batters he faced, Williams stifled Minnesota's offense until Chase DeLauter broke a 1-1 tie with a sixth-inning solo home run onto the right-field plaza.
Gabriel Arias and Patrick Bailey contributed home runs for Cleveland, while Brayan Rocchio added a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning to extend the Guardians' lead.
Returning from the injured list, Bailey Ober pitched effectively for the Twins, while Cade Smith earned his majors-leading 27th save to secure the Guardians' victory.
The Cleveland Guardians head to Miami on Friday to face the Marlins with LHP Parker Messick, while the Minnesota Twins host the Angels this weekend with RHP Zebby Matthews.
