Gaudreau Family 5K raises more than $500,000 for accessible playground at special education school

PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, AUG 1 – The Gaudreau Family 5K drew over 2,200 participants and raised $500,000 to fund an accessible playground at Archbishop Damiano School for children with special needs.

  • In May 2025, a memorial 5K event and family celebration at Washington Lake Park in New Jersey raised over $500,000 to fund the construction of an accessible playground.
  • The event paid tribute to John and Matthew, brothers who lost their lives last August in New Jersey after being struck by a suspected intoxicated driver while cycling, just before their sister's wedding.
  • In October 2020, principal Michele McCloskey began the project to create the playground, and over the course of five years, funds were gradually raised with considerable backing from the hockey community and others moved by the brothers' story.
  • The event attracted over 1,100 participants both in person and online from around the world, and Gaudreau noted the strong gratitude expressed by attendees for the positive impact the brothers had on the community.
  • Construction is planned to begin between late August and early September 2025, with a community build tentatively planned for October 4. To continue celebrating the brothers' legacy, the next 5K event is set for May 16, 2026.
