Petition draws nearly 6,000 signatures after NHL blocks Habs watch party in Quebec
More than 4,000 people signed a petition after the NHL blocked the event, which organizers said had broadcast rights and tickets sold for charity.
The National Hockey League blocked a planned Montreal Canadiens watch party at Gatineau's Slush Puppie Centre earlier this week, sparking a petition that drew nearly 6,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.
League officials cited the Ottawa Senators' exclusive 50-mile marketing territory, which prohibits rival teams from being promoted in Gatineau, treating the watch party as a marketing activity rather than a community gathering.
Organizers had secured broadcast rights from TVA Sports and sold about 400 tickets before the NHL denied authorization, stating the event 'never received the necessary authorization required by the NHL for large showings of our games.'
Wassim Aboutanos of Impératif français told CBC the restriction is unacceptable, while the petition urges the NHL to reconsider and let Gatineau fans experience playoff fever like Montrealers are enjoying.
Aboutanos is urging Canadians nationwide to join the petition, with National Post columnist Chris Selley calling the ban 'complete madness' for 'actively dissuading people from watching its product.
