The Gates Foundation met with Epstein about 30 times despite staff concerns, an external review says

WilmerHale interviewed more than 50 current and former employees and found no evidence that the foundation paid Epstein or knew of his crimes.

  • On Tuesday, The Gates Foundation released an external review finding it engaged with Jeffrey Epstein between 2011 and 2014 but made no payments and discovered no evidence of participation in criminal activities.
  • WilmerHale conducted more than 50 interviews with current and former employees and found the foundation's primary engagement with Epstein involved a proposed donor-advised fund and a grant to the International Peace Institute.
  • Regarding the proposed DAF, the report found the foundation did not pursue it after Epstein misrepresented potential donors' "knowledge of and willingness to commit to the DAF."
  • Following these findings, The Gates Foundation implemented a more centralized vetting process for potential donors and partners, and committed to "expand its policies" regarding conflicts of interest.
  • Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates previously called his meetings with Epstein "a grave error in judgement," as the foundation faced scrutiny over Chair Bill Gates' association with the late financier.
