Gallatin County to Consider Ordinance to Limit Camping on Public Property
- The Gallatin County Commission will vote Tuesday morning on a draft ordinance banning camping on unincorporated county land, proposed earlier this year by Sheriff Dan Springer.
- The proposal, inspired by Bozeman's 2025 urban camping ordinance, seeks to curb the growing occurrence of public camping before it becomes a more serious issue, according to Commissioner Macfarlane.
- The ordinance would ban camping on county public property and rights-of-way with misdemeanor penalties including fines up to $500 and up to ten days in jail, while discussions include waiving fines for completed intake with service providers.
- Sheriff Springer said, "Without an enforcement tool, actions taken on the street are not backed up," and Brown highlighted the need to clarify where people can and cannot sleep in the county.
- If approved, Gallatin County will regularly evaluate the ordinance’s effectiveness while continuing support for affordable housing, mental health, and addiction services to help residents thrive.
