The United States discusses with Romania the possibility of air travel on Mihail Kogałniceanu basis, for any intervention in the Middle East, and for a tank battalion on the Smärdan polygon, according to political sources. The request of the Romanian President for a certain period of US military defence capabilities on the ground of Mihail Kogałniceanu was approved by a majority of votes of the joint committees for the defence of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The 57th Air Base from Mihail Kogălniceanu is fully up-to-date. The new 3.5 km track, the longest for military aircraft in the country, will allow the operation of a complete F-16 schedule, and the infrastructure will support up to 10,000 military personnel and their families.
The United States would have requested permission to use the base of Mihail Kogałniceanu for any intervention in the Middle East, government sources say.
A possible positive decision by Romania at the request of the United States to use the air base from Mihail Kogałniceanu for the establishment of military capabilities, in the context of the tensions in the Middle East, would convey an important strategic message for the entire Baltic coast of NATO, including for the Republic of Moldova, considers the Romanian reserve commander Sandu Valentin Mateiu.
