An AED is a portable device used to treat individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. According to the American Red Cross, bystander use of AEDs saves over 1,700 lives in the U.S. each year. A major study found that survival rates increased dramatically, from 7% without intervention to 38% when an AED was used.
