Swans Won’t ‘Abandon’ Punished Players
The club said the suspensions protect its standards as police investigate an alleged hotel-room incident involving five players, including three senior stars.
- On Wednesday, the Sydney Swans banned five players—Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice, and James Jordon—for the remainder of the 2026 season following a breach of club standards.
- Chief executive Matthew Pavlich described the players' conduct on Sunday night and Monday morning as "a long way short of what we expect," citing staying out late, drinking, and bringing women back to the hotel.
- The players will be allowed to return to the football club after the season, though they remain excluded from selection for the remainder of 2026 including finals. "The AFL is supportive of the club's sanctions," the club said in a statement.
- While the club cooperates with an ongoing Victoria Police investigation, Chairman Andrew Pridham and Pavlich clarified the sanctions are independent of the police probe. Both emphasized the club's commitment to treating women respectfully.
- Without Heeney, Warner, and Blakey, the Swans are considered long odds to beat the Brisbane Lions or Hawthorn in the qualifying final. Warner, a free agent next year, faces additional uncertainty regarding his future.
