Final Defendant in 2008 OC Killing of LA County Sheriff’s Deputy Is Captured in Mexico

Roberto Salazar, the last fugitive charged in the killing of Deputy Juan Escalante, was returned from Mexico to face life sentence charges for the 2008 gang-related ambush, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, Roberto Salazar, 38, the last of six charged in the 2008 Deputy Juan Abel Escalante killing, was among more than two dozen fugitives returned from Mexico.
  • On Aug. 2, 2008, Deputy Juan Abel Escalante, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, was ambushed and shot in the back of the head outside his parents’ home, authorities said he was mistaken for a rival gang member.
  • In March, Mexican authorities, assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service’s Technical Operations Group, arrested Salazar about three hours south of Mexico City after nearly 17 years on the run.
  • On Thursday, Salazar will be arraigned in a downtown L.A. courthouse on first-degree murder with special circumstances and conspiracy charges, held without bail.
  • Sheriff Robert Luna said, `We have never forgotten our brother, Deputy Juan Abel Escalante`, and the extradition ensures Salazar will answer for his alleged role in the murder.
