SpaceX Plans to Launch Starlink Mobile Service in the US
The plan could let SpaceX sell directly to consumers and reduce reliance on telecom partners, after acquiring $17 billion in spectrum, sources said.
SpaceX plans to launch a retail Starlink Mobile service for U.S. consumers, moving beyond its existing satellite broadband offerings, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
President Gwynne Shotwell and Musk introduced these ambitious plans during an IPO roadshow, aiming to expand beyond current supplemental services that assist T-Mobile users in remote areas.
SpaceX acquired wireless spectrum licences from EchoStar for $17bn, a purchase the FCC cleared that provides the terrestrial foundation required for a standalone network.
Partner David Barden of New Street Research cautioned that building a network in saturated markets is "incredibly hard," noting major U.S. operators hold about 1,020MHz of spectrum versus SpaceX's 65MHz.
While SpaceX has never publicly confirmed retail Starlink Mobile plans, analysts view the proposal as a potential strategy to extract better deals from existing telecom partners rather than genuine market entry.
