French centre-left politician Raphael Glucksmann launched a bid for the presidency on Sunday, seeking to challenge firebrand hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon for dominance of France's fractured left ahead of a campaign increasingly shaped by the far right.
The EU politician does not want to leave France to the "extreme right." The left can win the election "if it adheres to its principles," said Glucksmann.
The candidate stated that if he wins the primaries he will not make an agreement with the left-wing party France Insubmissa (LFI in French) and opened the door to ecologists and communists.
French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann announced his candidacy for the presidential election in April 2027, which could be a joint candidate for the Social Democratic camp.
