French bulldogs continue to be most-loved, but this breed is on the rise
The Labrador retriever, golden retriever and German shepherd follow as the AKC adds more breeds and total registrations rise 35% over 20 years.
- The American Kennel Club announced Friday that the French bulldog holds the top ranking for the fourth consecutive year, beating the Labrador retriever.
- Frenchies have steadily climbed since ranking 38th in 2005, becoming increasingly popular over two decades. The breed is noted for its 'bat ears and half-flat, half-domed skull.'
- Labrador retrievers and German shepherds followed in the rankings, taking second through fourth place. The dachshund notably sits in fifth place, a spot the poodle held last year.
- This year, the AKC added the Danish-Swedish farmdog, a 'companion dog that loves to work and enjoys a challenge,' according to the AKC. The registry now totals 205 breeds, a 35% increase over 20 years.
- In 2026, the Teddy Roosevelt terrier, the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, and the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka will join the registry. The Teddy Roosevelt terrier is the only American breed among the three.
