Freight Transport: Db Cargo's New Boss Is Dismantling Almost Half of the Jobs
DB Cargo aims to regain profitability and comply with EU state-aid rules by cutting roughly half its German workforce through 2030, Deutsche Bahn said.
- Deutsche Bahn said on Thursday that it will cut about 6,000 jobs at DB Cargo by 2030 as part of a restructuring to return the unit to profit, with the company stating, `The current restructuring plan envisages a reduction of approximately 6,000 jobs at DB Cargo.`
- Facing EU scrutiny, DB Cargo faces an EU state-aid probe with a decision due in October and rising competition with competitors holding around 60% combined market share amid declines in automotive, steel and chemicals traffic.
- Operationally, the plan will close some smaller maintenance centres and overhaul the single-wagon transport service, while offering roles to affected DB Cargo workforce within Deutsche Bahn’s 220,000 staff.
- Deutsche Bahn said the cuts would help DB Cargo stand on its own two feet and reduce dependence on government funds, adding `The plan is to implement this in a socially responsible manner.`
- Looking ahead, Deutsche Bahn said the group plans to build up its international business, exploring opportunities around Rotterdam and southeastern Europe, and aims for a net profit in the double-digit millions for 2026.
