South Shore Line Trains Still Not Running After Freight Train Derailment
Officials said the shutdown follows a freight train derailment and power loss, and alternate transportation is advised for the evening and Thursday morning commute.
South Shore Line service remains suspended following a freight train derailment Wednesday night near East Chicago and Gary Metro, which caused a widespread power outage along the railroad.
Power outages impacted the Monon Corridor and Lakeshore South Shore Line routes, forcing crews to evaluate tracks and overhead wires for damage before resuming operations.
Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District spokesperson Nicole Barker said, "Safety is the first thing that we tackle," noting crews safely evacuated about 60 passengers from a stranded train.
Officials encouraged commuters traveling to or from Chicago to find alternate transportation, as they have not provided a timeline for when rail service will be fully restored.
Lingering delays may occur once service resumes, and riders are urged to check the MySouthShoreLine website or mobile app for the latest updates as information becomes available.
