Free Child Care Center Being Built for NYC Workers, Mayor Mamdani Announces
The pilot offers free full-day care for 40 children ages 6 weeks to 3 years, saving families an estimated $20,000 annually, to help retain municipal workers.
- On Monday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a free on-site child care pilot for municipal workers at the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, with applications opening April 30. The center will provide full-day care for children ages 6 weeks to 3 years.
- Expanding a program first announced by former Mayor Eric Adams, the initiative aims to reduce the average annual $20,000 child care burden for municipal employees while helping retain staff and boost productivity across city agencies.
- A $10 million renovation is underway to construct a 4,000-square-foot facility on the ground floor of the Municipal Building. The center operates Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., providing year-round care for 40 children.
- City Comptroller Mark Levine said the program allows parents to "commute together, drop them off before you go in, come down on your lunch hour" for pickup. This addresses the high cost of care forcing many families to leave the city.
- Mamdani continues pursuing his campaign promise of universal child care for all New Yorkers. The city plans to scale up free care for 2-year-olds from 2,000 seats this September to 12,000 toddlers by 2027 using state funding.
