Free Cabin Luggage and Delay Compensation Approved by EU Parliament
Lawmakers backed the measure by 646 votes to 12 as airlines must show fares with carry-on luggage and pay delay compensation.
- On Tuesday, The European Parliament approved revised air passenger rules in a 646–12–3 vote, preserving free cabin luggage and maintaining financial compensation for flight delays.
- Negotiations for these protections began in 2013, with lawmakers pushing for expanded baggage rights and delay safeguards until reaching a final legislative compromise.
- Passengers retain the right to a free personal item measuring 40cm by 30cm by 15cm, as airlines must now display fares inclusive of carry-on luggage, ending fees previously used by Ryanair and EasyJet.
- Airlines must pay compensation within 30 days of a claim, and passengers have nine months to file, alongside new rights to correct name spelling errors without fees.
- Implementation of the new rules begins in 2027, maintaining compensation tiers of €300 for flights over 3,500 kilometers and €600 for longer delays or cancellations.
