Fredericton Chief Says Police Are Making Progress Since Collapse of Two Murder Trials
Chief Gary Forward said 18 of 19 reform steps are complete or underway after an independent review of failed homicide investigations.
On Thursday, Chief Gary Forward told a public safety committee that the Fredericton Police Force is implementing 19 recommendations following the 2025 collapse of two murder trials.
Ontario lawyer Ian D. Scott's review identified an "insurmountable evidentiary issue" in the force's investigation, prompting the Crown to stay charges in both cases.
The city budgeted $250,000 to enact the changes, and Forward reported that 10 of the 19 recommendations are complete, with the remainder due by June of next year.
While most tasks proceed, recommendation number four regarding migration of eight significant historical files faces delays; Forward noted two trained civilian employees are working to complete it by year's end.
Fredericton Mayor Steve Hicks expressed satisfaction with the department's transparency, stating the police force is "doing a good job" implementing reforms and working to rectify past issues.
