Frecciarossa in Germany: Tests Begin for Rome and Milan Rail Links to Munich

FS says the certification phase will support four planned connections between Italy and Munich, with service expected to begin in summer 2027.

  • Ferrovie dello Stato has begun test runs of Frecciarossa trains in Germany and Austria, marking the international certification phase for expansion beyond existing services in France and Spain.
  • FS Group announced services between Milan, Rome, and Munich scheduled for summer 2027, relying on a partnership with Deutsche Bahn and Austrian national railways to adapt trains for different signalling systems.
  • Routes will connect Milan and Rome to Munich via Verona, Bolzano, and Innsbruck; from December 2028, the Brenner Base Tunnel opening will enable ten connections between Italy and Germany.
  • Transport Minister Matteo Salvini described the milestone as "a further step confirming the growth of the FS Group and its ability to win new markets abroad, while providing better services and infrastructure in Italy."
  • FS chief executive Gianpiero Strisciuglio said the 'European Metro' project aims to make trains "the benchmark mode of transport for mobility across Europe," while the company targets reaching the United Kingdom via the Channel Tunnel by 2029.
