Fraternity leader at Northern Arizona University charged with hazing in student’s alcohol death
Carter Eslick was indicted for felony hazing after causing a student to consume fatal alcohol levels during a fraternity pledge event, officials said.
- A pledge master for a fraternity at Northern Arizona University was indicted Friday on a felony hazing charge involving the January death of 18-year-old Colin Daniel Martinez.
- Martinez died of alcohol poisoning on Jan. 31 after allegedly being coerced to consume vodka at a rush event, reaching a blood alcohol level of 0.425%, five times the legal limit.
- According to court documents, Coconino County Attorney Ammon Barker charged Eslick with a Class 4 felony for creating a "substantial risk of death" during initiation activities.
- Following the death, Northern Arizona University suspended the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and the national organization later voted to shutter the chapter.
- While two other fraternity members were arrested during the initial investigation, only Eslick faces charges; his attorney, Josh Blumenrich, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
