Sixth person who had measles has died in Pennsylvania, local coroner says
The coroner said the woman had underlying conditions and a recent measles diagnosis, and the case met the state’s definition.
On Saturday, The Franklin County Coroner investigated the death of a 39-year-old woman, marking Pennsylvania's sixth measles-associated death in 2026.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, a measles-associated death is defined as one occurring within 30 days of symptom onset, though this classification does not necessarily mean measles was the sole cause.
Officials noted the woman had underlying health conditions and a recent measles diagnosis, making this the first such death reported in Franklin County in many years.
Urging caution and vigilance, The Franklin County Coroner said, "Caution and vigilance are key to our success in the treatment of this disease and its aftereffects."
State health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise that vaccination provides the best protection, as measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air.
