France won’t grant crab licence off Newfoundland without discussion, ambassador says
France’s ambassador to Canada, Hélène Farnaud-Defromont, said France has not issued a fishing licence off Newfoundland, despite a reported pledge by President Emmanuel Macron.
Farnaud-Defromont said France would consult Canada before granting an exploratory snow crab licence to a company in St-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
The reported licence would concern an area near Newfoundland that Canada claims as an extension of its continental shelf.
Farnaud-Defromont said France wants to respect its agreements with Canada and does not intend to challenge them.
