Europeans warn Iran of UN sanctions if no progress on nuclear deal
FRANCE, JUL 18 – France, the UK, and Germany will reactivate UN sanctions on Iran by end of August without verifiable progress on the nuclear deal, revoking sanctions lifted under the 2015 agreement.
- In Paris, the three European powers told Iran they will restore UN sanctions through the snapback mechanism unless Iran resumes diplomacy and makes progress by the end of August.
- Under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, UN sanctions were lifted in return for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program, and its snapback clause allows reimposition for non-compliance.
- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in recent days that Tehran would accept a resumption of nuclear talks with the U.S. if there were assurances of no more attacks, and diplomats say reaching a deal before the end of August is unrealistic without on-the-ground monitoring.
- Speaking to Le Monde, Abbas Araqchi said `It was US that left the negotiation table in June this year and chose a military option instead, not Iran`, and later told Le Monde `The threat of sanctions does not help diplomacy`.
- Ahead of the UN resolution's October 18 expiry, France, Britain, and Germany warn Iran that UN sanctions could be reimposed by October 15 if no progress occurs, maintaining leverage over Iran’s nuclear program.
