France to Reimburse Anti-Obesity Drugs, Minister Says
France will cover 65% of the cost, with most patients receiving full reimbursement because they have related conditions, the health minister said.
- French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced on Thursday that France will begin reimbursing weight-loss drugs Wegovy and Mounjaro starting 15 June, becoming the first European Union nation to provide permanent, standard coverage.
- The decision targets severe obesity, limiting coverage to patients with a BMI of 35 or more with a weight-related comorbidity, or a BMI of at least 40, addressing a population where around 18% of the French population are obese.
- Officially, the reimbursement rate is 65%, but Rist noted that for the vast majority of patients with comorbidities like diabetes or hypertension, coverage will be 100%, costing around €100 million annually.
- Meanwhile, US pharmacy benefit manager CVS Health is restoring coverage for Eli Lilly's Zepbound after excluding it last year, as sales of the drug grew 122% in the fourth quarter.
- Rist stated the policy targets "around one million people" in France, positioning the country alongside the UK as an outlier in providing permanent reimbursement for weight-loss treatments within the European Union.
