A heat wave scorches parts of Europe and fans wildfire threat in France
SOUTHWEST FRANCE, AUG 11 – Météo-France issued a rare red alert for 12 departments due to extreme heat causing wildfires and pollution, with temperatures reaching 43°C in southwestern France, officials said.
- On Monday, Southwest France sweltered as temperatures reached 43 C in Charente and Aude, prompting Météo-France to place 12 departments on red alert, issued only eight times since 2004.
- On Friday, Europe’s land temperatures have risen about 2.3 C above pre-industrial levels, as the heatwave begins and extends into the 15 August holiday weekend, according to the EU’s Copernicus climate service.
- In Aude, hundreds of firefighters monitored the wildfire perimeter, which burned through 160 square kilometres last week, but officials say it could smoulder for weeks.
- Authorities declared an ozone pollution emergency with traffic restrictions in the Aix-Marseille-Provence area, as health officials warned residents to avoid outdoor activity and limit driving.
- Broader climate data underline accelerating trends, with EU data showing burned areas far above the long-term average and Carbon Brief predicting 2025 as one of the hottest years.
