- On Thursday, the French National Assembly rejected a Constitutional Reform Bill for New Caledonia by a vote of 190 to 107, blocking a government effort to grant the overseas territory partial statehood.
- Emmanuel Tjibaou, an indigenous Kanak pro-independence leader, led the rejection motion, arguing the bill was "not consensual" and "symbolic" because his party, the Socialist Kanak National Liberation Front , opposed the text.
- Far-Right parliamentary leader Marine Le Pen called the bill "dangerous for national unity," while the FLNKS criticized the proposal as a "lure" of independence amounting to "logic of assimilation."
- Naima Moutchou, France's minister for overseas territories, warned the rejection would bring negotiations "years backwards," while French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced signatories of the Bougival-Elysée-Oudinot Accord will meet next week.
- With the reform stalled, officials face mounting pressure to resolve voter eligibility for upcoming provincial elections, which must occur no later than June 28, 2026, in the 270,000-person archipelago.
