France bids farewell to beloved pandas bound for China
Huan Huan’s chronic kidney failure led to early repatriation of the pandas, who have lived at Beauval Zoo since 2012 and produced three cubs, zoo officials said.
- On Nov 25, Huan Huan, female giant panda, and Yuan Zi, male giant panda, will leave Beauval Zoo in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher to retire at the Chengdu panda sanctuary.
- Zoo director Rodolphe Delord said the decision followed a medical diagnosis after Huan Huan, female giant panda, was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease; French and Chinese veterinary teams decided to send them back while health permits.
- After two days in quarantine, the pair will be moved to Paris‑Charles de Gaulle airport early Tuesday morning and fly a 12-hour flight in big white boxes with windows, breathing holes, and the inscription `Bon voyage`.
- More than 200 people braved cold and rain on Sunday to bid farewell at Beauval Zoo, where pandas produced three cubs and attracted about two million visitors in 2023.
- Amid long-standing `panda diplomacy`, the transfer underscores diplomatic ties as the couple will continue raising awareness, with about 2,000 pandas in the wild and 500 in captivity worldwide.
