France bans alcohol consumption at music festivals under red heatwave alert
Authorities said the ban is meant to protect emergency and healthcare services as 35 departments face the country’s highest heat warning.
France issued a red heatwave alert for Sunday, covering 35 departments and affecting around 26 million people as a ferocious heatwave dug in across the country.
Meteo-France announced, "Very high temperatures are settling in for the long term across the country," as the prolonged heatwave beginning earlier this week forced train cancellations and school closures.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that "Prefects will issue decrees banning alcohol consumption in public spaces in the departments under red alert" during the annual Fete de la Musique celebrations.
Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire stated, "The combination of alcohol, heat and proximity to water — those are three risk factors that don't mix well," underscoring health concerns.
Authorities are keeping parks and gardens in Paris open through the night to help Parisians cope with heat, while another 45 departments remain under orange alert status.
