Fourth group of Marineland whales leaving shuttered Ontario park
Three belugas, including Cyprus, Jasper and Xavier, were loaded for SeaWorld San Diego as Marineland nears the end of its whale transfers.
- On Aug 21, Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont., transferred a fourth cohort of belugas—Cyprus, Jasper, and Xavier—onto a plane bound for SeaWorld in San Diego.
- Marineland closed two years ago and can no longer afford whale care; last year, Ottawa blocked a proposed sale of 30 belugas to an aquarium in China.
- Previous operations successfully transported whales to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, SeaWorld in San Antonio, and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Marineland adviser Andrew Burns said the series has gone "exceptionally well."
- Two more planned transfers include an upcoming overnight flight to transport dolphins and belugas to Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, part of an agreement with American and Spanish aquariums.
- After this latest cohort, eight belugas and four dolphins remain at the Niagara Falls, Ont., facility, all scheduled to be shipped abroad by the end of the month.
