Drone sinks ship off Bulgaria coast, prime minister says
- On Tuesday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that drones struck two ships off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, sinking one vessel and prompting emergency rescue operations.
- The Ukrainian-owned Chelsea, sailing under a Maltese flag, was hit by three drones around 1:30 a.m., located 18 nautical miles off the coast, Radev said.
- Rescuers evacuated all 15 crew members from the Chelsea, with five receiving treatment for minor injuries; one crew member from the sunken vessel was also rescued.
- Radev called the attacks "absolutely unacceptable" and sought NATO and European Union assistance, though Bulgaria lacks clear evidence to identify who was responsible.
- Although Bulgaria does not border Russia or Ukraine, the nation holds a strategic position on the Black Sea, where hybrid drone attacks linked to the ongoing war present growing concerns.
