Four Killed After Private Bus Crashes on Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway

The bus driver was arrested for negligent driving after drowsiness caused a crash killing four and injuring three on a busy expressway, police said.

  • On Monday, a private bus crashed into a roadside railing on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway near Puttappanadoddi, killing four passengers traveling from Calicut to Bengaluru in the early hours.
  • Driver Riyaz allegedly dozed off while operating the bus at high speed, causing it to veer into the railing; he initially claimed he swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, but CCTV footage contradicted his account.
  • The bus carried 43 people when metal fencing pierced its left side, fatally injuring Mohammad Farhan, Sulfi Rafeez, Rasheed, and Sakir; three injured passengers were admitted to hospital for treatment.
  • Channapatna Traffic Police arrested the driver and registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for negligent driving. Injured passengers Abdul and Alain are receiving treatment at a private hospital.
  • The crash occurs amid a broader road safety crisis: the city recorded 171 deaths and 1,213 injuries from road accidents in 2025. Superintendent of Police Srinivas Gowda inspected the site to assess the incident.
