Body found in search for 23-year-old Briton who went missing while swimming in sea off Portugal
Portuguese police said the body was recovered after a search involving local firefighters and civil protection teams, following an alert from a fisherman.
Maritime Police recovered a body believed to be that of a missing 23-year-old British man off the Albufeira coast on Tuesday afternoon, with death confirmed at the scene following a fisherman's alert.
The man vanished while swimming with a 19-year-old companion at Peneco Beach in Albufeira on Thursday; the companion managed to exit the water and seek help after the 23-year-old disappeared.
A search operation began last Friday after the disappearance, with Maritime Police, the Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters, and the Albufeira Municipal Civil Protection Service mobilized following a fisherman's 6:37 pm alert.
Officials confirmed death at the scene and, following contact with the Public Prosecutor, transported the body to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of the Western Algarve for identification.
The British Consulate in Portimao was informed of the incident, with The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office monitoring the situation to coordinate ongoing support for the deceased's family.
