Kamala Harris Teases Potential 2028 Platform: ‘I Know This Is Going To Be Controversial’

Former Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled several proposals that would dramatically reshape the federal government during a speech Friday, signaling a significant shift to the left as speculation continues to mount over a possible 2028 presidential campaign. Speaking at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, Harris acknowledged that her comments would likely generate controversy before outlining several constitutional and institutional changes she believes deserve renewed debate. “I know this is going to be controversial coming from me, in particular,” Harris said. Among the proposals Harris called for were eliminating the Electoral College, expanding the U.S. Supreme Court to 13 justices, and revisiting statehood for both Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. “We need to revisit the Electoral College. We need to revisit the point of expanding the court, to 13 justices like we have 13 district courts. We need to revisit, if they so want, statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C.,” the former vice president argued. Harris did not advocate abolishing the Electoral College during her unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign, when she ultimately lost both the Electoral College and the nationwide popular vote to President Donald Trump. Eliminating the Electoral College is a longstanding goal of the Democratic Socialists of America. Likewise, Harris stopped short of endorsing Supreme Court expansion during the 2024 race. At the time, she instead supported imposing term limits on justices and establishing a binding code of ethics for the Court. During that campaign, Harris backed statehood for Washington, D.C., but did not publicly support making Puerto Rico a state. In Friday’s remarks, Harris also called for tougher consequences for judicial nominees who intentionally mislead senators during the confirmation process, suggesting that Congress should adopt procedures allowing nominees who lie under oath to be held in contempt. The speech comes amid reports that Harris has been holding discussions with some of the Democratic Party’s most progressive figures as she weighs another run for the White House. According to Axios, Harris reached out to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in June to discuss the future direction of the Democratic Party and to arrange a more extensive conversation. The report also said Harris met in April with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Chicago, another leading voice on the party’s progressive wing. Despite leaving office after the 2024 election, Harris remains the early favorite for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, she holds a double-digit lead over California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Ocasio-Cortez. While Harris declined to announce a campaign, she also made clear that she has not ruled one out. “I am fully, sincerely, focused on these midterms,” she said. “I have not made a decision.” {Matzav.com}
