Former Tory home secretary Suella Braverman defects to Reform
Suella Braverman cited Tory failures on immigration and public services as reasons for joining Reform UK, which now holds eight MPs and leads polls by 34%, Nigel Farage said.
- On Monday, Suella Braverman announced at a veterans' rally that she is resigning the Conservative whip and joining Reform UK, saying she believes a better future is possible.
- Following earlier defections this month by Robert Jenrick, former leadership challenger, and Andrew Rosindell, Romford MP, Braverman said she pushed to leave the European Convention on Human Rights but was blocked and sacked by Conservative ministers.
- Her ministerial record shows rapid reversals after September 2022, as Ms Braverman was first made Home Secretary under Liz Truss, resigned in October 2022, reinstated six days later by Rishi Sunak, and sacked in November 2023, replaced by James Cleverly.
- Braverman will sit immediately as a Reform MP, boosting Reform UK to eight MPs without triggering a by-election, and Farage said it was "about time".
- Braverman warned Britain is "indeed broken", accusing immigration and public services of failure, and she vowed to explain her reasons later today while acknowledging some Fareham and Waterlooville Conservatives will feel disappointed.
