Former Northwest B.C. Teacher Banned Following Sexual Relationship with Former Student
Ted Ewald admitted the conduct in a consent agreement, and regulators said he violated trust and harmed the student’s emotional safety.
Terrace teacher Ted Ewald has accepted a lifetime teaching ban after admitting to a sexual relationship with a former student, ending his career in education.
The Teacher Regulation Board found Ewald violated his privileged position of power and trust by engaging with a student interested in Indigenous land-based education connected to their cultural identity.
Ewald maintained contact after the student's graduation, taking them on an overnight trip approximately five months later where they had sexual intercourse; the relationship continued for six months.
Following his resignation from School District 82 on March 2, 2025, Ewald signed an undertaking not to teach on March 7, 2025, culminating in the August 18, 2026, consent agreement.
The consent agreement emphasizes educators are role models held to higher standards; those impacted by sexual violence can contact the 24-hour Sexual Assault Support Crisis line or the RCMP.
