Former Syrian colonel unfit for trial in landmark UK crimes against humanity murder case
Prosecutors said Salem al-Salem’s advanced motor neuron disease prevents a plea, and a trial of the facts will examine murder and torture allegations.
Salem al-Salem, a former Syrian air force colonel, is unfit to stand trial in the UK for three counts of murder as crimes against humanity related to 2011 attacks on civilians.
Medical evidence showed al-Salem has a neurological condition advanced enough to prevent trial, leading to not guilty pleas entered on his behalf.
Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb ruled that al-Salem will face a trial of facts on murder and torture allegations next year but will not be required to attend court.
He is the first person charged in the UK with murder as a crime against humanity under the International Criminal Court Act of 2001.
