Former University of South Carolina Quarterback Stephen Garcia Diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer
Stephen Garcia has started FOLFIRINOX chemotherapy, and supporters say the campaign is also pushing regular colon screenings.
- On Wednesday, former University of South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia announced he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer. The Lutz, Florida native revealed the news via Facebook and a GoFundMe campaign organized by his wife, Maria Garcia.
- Playing under coach Steve Spurrier from 2008-11, Garcia led South Carolina to the 2010 SEC East championship. He amassed 7,597 passing yards during his collegiate tenure, establishing himself as one of the program's most accomplished quarterbacks.
- His medical team initiated an aggressive chemotherapy regimen known as FOLFIRINOX to combat the advanced disease. The GoFundMe stated: "His medical team is starting him on FOLFIRINOX, which confirms they are taking the most aggressive treatment path available to fight this."
- Current South Carolina coach Shane Beamer expressed support, texting Garcia to "attack this thing with the same mindset" he displayed as a player. The community launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical costs.
- Garcia urges others to get checked regularly, emphasizing that "if Stephen's story can encourage even one person to schedule their screening, it adds a greater purpose to this difficult fight." Early detection remains critical as colorectal cancer is often silent in early stages.
