Justice Department Seizes $10 Million From Ransomware Conspirator
Martino admitted feeding victims’ insurance limits and negotiation details to BlackCat operators and helping deploy ransomware in five attacks, prosecutors said.
- On Monday, former DigitalMint ransomware negotiator Angelo Martino pleaded guilty to extortion for conspiring with BlackCat affiliates to target five U.S. companies he was hired to defend.
- Martino betrayed clients by feeding confidential negotiation strategies and insurance policy limits to BlackCat operators, maximizing ransom payments for himself and his co-conspirators.
- Working alongside Kevin Tyler Martin and Ryan Clifford Goldberg, Martino extorted more than $16 million from five U.S. organizations. Authorities seized $10 million in assets, including a luxury fishing boat and two Florida properties.
- DigitalMint immediately terminated both employees after the Justice Department informed the company of its investigation. Martino faces up to 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for July 9.
- Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva described the case as an "extreme, albeit rare, example" of ransomware negotiation risks, while the FBI continues dismantling the ecosystem by apprehending key facilitators.
