Former poker player Sunny Mehta is not showing his cards as the Devils' new GM
Mehta said he will evaluate the roster and staff while aiming to turn the Devils into a sustained contender.
- On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, New Jersey Devils NHL owner David Blitzer introduced Sunny Mehta as the club's new general manager in Newark, New Jersey. Mehta, a former director of analytics for the team, called the role his "dream job."
- Blitzer, who tested Mehta's decision-making a dozen years ago, rehired the 48-year-old former professional poker player and options trader for his analytical background. His poker and trading experience previously helped him win in hockey.
- Mehta intends to apply his poker background to team building, stating "you have to almost somewhat ignore short-term results and just focus on your process." He believes his experience at the tables and as an options trader helps him understand how to build a hockey team.
- While pledging to build a sustained championship contender, Mehta stated, "No decisions have been made on anything pertaining to that," regarding the current roster or coach Sheldon Keefe. An evaluation process is underway.
- To reshape the roster around stars Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and captain Nico Hischier, Mehta aims to make the franchise a destination, citing proximity to Manhattan and nice suburbs as advantages. This positions the Devils to compete long-term.
