Former Lakers star Rick Fox enters Bahamian politics

  • On Monday, Rick Fox, three-time NBA champion, announced on Facebook he will run for a seat in the Bahamas' House of Assembly but was not immediately available for comment.
  • Born in Toronto, Canada, Fox played 14 NBA seasons, pursued acting after retiring in 2004, lives mainly in the Los Angeles area, and was appointed ambassador at large for sports in 2022.
  • The election is due no later than October and Prime Minister Philip Davis will set the date within the five-year limit since 2021, while under the Bahamas' parliamentary system Fox will run for one of 39 constituencies.
  • Fox pledged, "As a candidate and as a leader for the Bahamas I will demand transparency, honesty, integrity while demanding a level of excellence from all of us," amid corruption cases and Hurricane Dorian recovery.
  • Fox's celebrity includes co-founding Echo Fox and purchasing a League of Legends Championship Series franchise, though he has since left, and he framed the bid as larger than party politics.
