Former Kwara governor, Cornelius Adebayo is dead

  • Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, former senator, governor of Kwara State, and Minister of Communications, died early Wednesday morning in Abuja.
  • Cornelius Adebayo, born in early 1941 in the town of Igbaja in Kwara State, first held the position of Kwara's Commissioner for Education from 1975 until 1978 before securing a seat in the Senate in 1979.
  • He assumed office as governor of Kwara State in 1983, became active in the pro-democracy group NADECO following the invalidation of the June 12 presidential election, refused a ministerial position offered in the same year, and was detained in connection with a 1995 bombing in Ilorin.
  • Following increased military pressure, Adebayo fled to Canada in 1996 and later served as Minister of Communications and Transportation from 2003 to 2006 under President Obasanjo.
  • Officials described Adebayo as an administrator and patriot who contributed to Kwara's development, and the Emir of Ilorin prayed for his soul and family during his passing.
