USC Great Stephen Garcia Says Support From Gamecock Nation Helping Power Cancer Fight
Stephen Garcia said his medical team is starting FOLFIRINOX, the most aggressive chemotherapy available, after he confirmed the diagnosis on Facebook.
Former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Stephen Garcia announced Wednesday he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer and begun aggressive FOLFIRINOX chemotherapy after doctors discovered the disease had spread to his liver.
After ignoring symptoms for seven months, Garcia delayed seeking medical care for abdominal pain and bowel changes that began last summer. His wife urged him to get checked, finally prompting the diagnosis.
Garcia spoke emotionally about informing his three children and wife, Masha Garcia, describing the moment as "tough." He credited his wife as "extremely strong" for her support throughout the diagnosis and treatment.
Support has poured in from the football community, including rivals Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. Supporters have also donated to a GoFundMe Page established by his wife.
Maintaining a positive mindset, Garcia vowed, "We're going to kick this thing in the teeth and knock it out." His medical team remains confident in his recovery, citing his youth and overall health as favorable factors.
