Former F1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone Arrested for Carrying Shotgun at Airport
Ecclestone admitted carrying the gun but said he did not know it was in his luggage, according to reports.
Former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone was arrested on Monday at Tires Aerodrome in Cascais, Portugal, after authorities discovered a shotgun in his possession during a "routine operation."
The 95-year-old businessman admitted to carrying the firearm but claimed he was unaware it was in his luggage, later paying bail to fly to Switzerland.
This marks the second time in four years Ecclestone has faced airport gun allegations; he was detained in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2022 when a firearm was discovered as he prepared to board a private jet.
In October 2023, the British magnate was convicted of tax fraud at Southwark Crown Court, agreeing to pay HMRC over £650 million and receiving a 17-month suspended prison sentence.
Ecclestone later dismissed the Portuguese arrest as a "silly, tiny little incident," having founded the Formula One Group in 1987 and controlled its commercial rights until 2017.
