On October 9, the Chinese Communist Party officially announced that Lian Ji, former president of the Chinese Academy of Arts, and Ding Yexian, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region, had been expelled from the Party. Lian Ji was accused of engaging in power-for-money transactions and of carrying out orders from the authorities to suppress the liberal magazine Yanhuang Chunqiu.
