Former Camden County Jail Supervisor Sentenced in Beating of Inmate in 2022
CAMDEN COUNTY, GEORGIA, JUL 24 – Ryan Robert Biegel pleaded guilty to using unreasonable force against a pretrial detainee, receiving 16 months in federal prison and three years supervised release, federal prosecutors said.
- On Thursday, a U.S. District Court judge sentenced Ryan Robert Biegel to 16 months in federal prison, closing the federal case.
- Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to using unreasonable force after jail video showed him and colleagues beating Jarrett Hobbs in September 2022.
- According to the Department of Justice, Biegel punched Hobbs five times in the back of the head and then struck him 22 times with fists and knees before pushing him against a wall and restraining him.
- According to Camden County Superior Court records, all three still face state charges of battery and oath violations, while Sheriff Kevin Chaney said `Accountability applies to everyone—including law enforcement.`
- Beyond the prison term, Camden County officials paid Hobbs a cash settlement and Biegel will serve three years of supervised release.
