Former CEO of SriLankan Airlines found dead, days after securing bail in corruption case
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama issued an arrest warrant for CEO Kapila Chandrasena yesterday over alleged violations of bail conditions imposed by the court.
Prosecutors alleged on Tuesday that Chandrasena accepted kickbacks from Airbus while serving as CEO; the case was revived under 2024 anti-corruption laws enacted by the National People government.
Chandrasena claimed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa received LKR 20 million three times at his home in 2015 during his presidency, according to court testimony.
This development aligns with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's pledge to prosecute high-ranking officials and clean public life, a cornerstone of the National People government's agenda.
Defense lawyers filed an affidavit in Court arguing that Chandrasena's bribery admission was recorded under duress, challenging the admissibility of his confession.
Former Sri Lankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena was found dead at the Colombo home of former Sri Lankan cricket captain Aravinda de Silva. Chandrasena was recently in the news for allegations of bribery in a multi-billion dollar aircraft deal. Police and magistrates are investigating the case.
