President expresses condolence over death of Ven. Myeongjin

Venerable Myeongjin, who served as the abbot of Bongeunsa Temple, passed away in Jeju on the 22nd. He was 76 years old and had been a monk for 52 years. According to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the police, and fire authorities, Venerable Myeongjin passed away at approximately 9:38 a.m. on this day in the waters near Haye Port in Haye-dong, Seogwipo City, Jeju.
Venerable Myeongjin, who served as the head monk of Bongeunsa Temple, has died in a freediving accident off the coast of Seogwipo, Jeju. Born in 1950, the monk led the reform of the Jogye Order and held key positions; he had recently concluded a lawsuit with the Order and regained his monastic status. Funeral arrangements are currently being discussed.
