Former Army Chief Gen Vishwa Nath Sharma Passes Away at 96

The Indian Army said he served as chief from 1988 to 1990 and earned the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Param Vishisht Seva Medal.

  • Former Indian Army Chief General Vishwa Nath Sharma passed away on Friday at 96, the Indian Army announced. The 15th Chief of Army Staff served from 1988 to 1990 and was a decorated veteran of the 1965 Indo-Pak War.
  • Born on June 4, 1930, Sharma hailed from a distinguished military family and was the younger brother of Major Somnath Sharma, Independent India's first Param Vir Chakra awardee. He upheld this legacy with distinction.
  • Known in Army circles as 'Tich' Sharma, the General commanded the 16 Light Cavalry and issued a 'no withdrawal' order during the 1987-88 Sumdorong Chu standoff. This firm stance against Chinese forces helped resolve the crisis under mutual agreement.
  • Full military honours were accorded during final rites at Brar Square Crematorium in Delhi Cantonment on Saturday. Army Chief Gen. Dhiraj Seth laid a wreath on behalf of all ranks.
  • Following retirement, Sharma dedicated four decades to serving underprivileged communities through a free tuberculosis clinic in Himachal Pradesh. He personally provided essential healthcare in remote areas alongside his medical team.
